Dining in Osaka with Food Allergies: What to Tell a Small Seafood Restaurant

Can a seafood restaurant in Osaka accommodate food allergies or ingredients you do not eat? At our restaurant, we may be able to prepare an alternative ingredient when possible. However, some elements cannot be changed because of the cooking process, so please contact us before booking rather than waiting until you arrive.

This guide is for international visitors planning a seafood dinner in Shinsaibashi. It explains what information helps us understand your request, what we can and cannot promise, and how communication works at our small six-seat counter.

Tell us before you book

Please share allergy information as early and as clearly as possible. A short message is helpful, but precise details are even better. Tell us:

  • Which ingredient causes the allergy
  • Whether cross-contact is a concern
  • Whether the ingredient must be completely avoided
  • Whether it is an allergy, an intolerance, or simply an ingredient you prefer not to eat
  • How many people in your party are affected

We are a small seafood restaurant, so shellfish and other seafood ingredients are handled in the same kitchen. We do not want to make a promise before understanding the details. After you contact us, we will explain what may be possible and what cannot be changed.

Useful English phrases for your reservation

You do not need perfect Japanese. You can copy and adapt one of these sentences when making an inquiry:

I have an allergy to ____. Could you tell me whether the course can be adjusted?

I cannot eat ____. This is an allergy / intolerance / personal preference.

Cross-contact is a concern for me. Is dining at your restaurant possible?

Please do not write only “seafood allergy” if you know the specific ingredient. Shellfish, crustaceans and mollusks are different categories, and the exact ingredient matters when we consider what can be prepared.

A six-seat seafood counter in Shinsaibashi

Shellfish, Shrimp & Crab — “貝と海老そして蟹” in Japanese — is a small restaurant run by a husband-and-wife team. All six seats are at the counter. The owner prepares the food, while Mizuki-chan helps at the restaurant alongside her separate daytime work.

Because the restaurant is small, guests are close to the kitchen and can ask questions during the meal. At the same time, the compact kitchen means some cooking processes or ingredients cannot simply be separated. That is why advance consultation is important.

English menus and friendly communication

An English menu is available. Our spoken English is not perfect, but we will welcome you warmly and communicate as clearly as we can. Showing a written list of ingredients on your phone can make the conversation easier.

If your request is complex, contacting us before your visit gives both you and the restaurant time to confirm the details. Please do not rely only on automatic translation for the name of a serious allergen; include the original English ingredient name as well.

Choosing a course

Course names, prices and cancellation policies should be checked on the current Tabelog reservation page. Please include your dietary request when you make your inquiry. We may offer an alternative ingredient when possible, but some items cannot be changed because of the preparation process.

If we cannot safely or realistically accommodate a request, we would rather explain that honestly before your visit. The goal is not simply to say yes to every request, but to help you make an informed decision about your dinner.

Getting here from Shinsaibashi or Namba

The restaurant is about a five-minute walk from Shinsaibashi Station and about a five-minute walk from the Namba stations. It is also approximately 30 seconds from the Shinsaibashi-suji covered shopping arcade.

See the official access page before your visit. For the latest available dates and course information, use the Tabelog reservation form.

Frequently asked questions

Can you guarantee an allergy-free meal?

No blanket guarantee is made. Please tell us the exact allergy and whether cross-contact is a concern. We will discuss whether your request can be accommodated.

Can ingredients I dislike be changed?

When possible, we may prepare an alternative ingredient. Some changes are not possible because of the cooking process, so advance consultation is required.

Do you have an English menu?

Yes. An English menu is available. Our English service is not perfect, but we will communicate in a friendly and practical way.

Can I ask after arriving?

You may ask questions, but allergy and dietary requests should be shared before booking. Advance notice gives us the best chance to explain what is possible.

Can a small group book the restaurant privately?

Private booking can be discussed from four guests. Conditions depend on the budget and day of the week, so please contact the restaurant in advance.
